Learning to fly a hot air balloon begins before the balloon ever leaves the ground. You prepare for the flight, check the conditions, understand where you want to go, and make sure you have the supplies and all relevant information you need.
The ADHD brain needs preparation too. Before launching into the day, take a moment to understand your mental and physical condition, identify what matters most, and remove some of the unnecessary “ballast” that can weigh you down. Then, just as the balloon is inflated and the burner creates lift, you have to activate your brain. Start small, create some movement, and build enough momentum to get off the ground.
Once airborne, the pilot learns to work with the wind rather than fight it. You cannot control the wind, but you can change altitude and make adjustments, and continually navigate toward your destination. The ADHD brain works much the same way. Distractions, interruptions, unexpected opportunities, and changing circumstances are going to come. The goal is not perfect focus; the goal is learning to recognize when you have drifted and realign. At the same time, you must learn to manage your burner - your energy and your attention. Sometimes you need to fire it and use your creativity and hyperfocus; other times you may need to coast, recover, and conserve your fuel. You do not have to operate at maximum intensity all day to make meaningful progress.
Eventually, every flight needs to land. Knowing when to stop, capture unfinished thoughts, and transition out of work is just as important as knowing how to start. After landing, the pilot packs up, reviews the flight, learns from the conditions, and prepares for the next one. YOur day can end the same way. Do not judge yourself solely by what you did not accomplish. Ask what you learned, where you drifted, what helped you find your wind, and what you can adjust tomorrow.
Learning to fly is not about controlling the wind. It is about preparing your balloon, creating lift, navigating the conditions, managing your fuel, knowing when to land, and having the wisdom to learn from every flight.
